DJI Appears To Be Looking At The Drone Racing Scene

Makes Three FCC Filings For Associated Hardware

Three filings made by Chinese dronemaker DJI with the FCC give at least the impression that the company is preparing to enter the drone racing scene.

Drone DJ reports that the filings indicated that DJI is getting set to release three new products in the near future, and if they are combined, they could make an impressive drone racing package. The filings are for an FPV Air Unit, an FPV remote controller, and FPV goggles.

DJI arguably makes the most popular drones for personal and commercial use, but they do not have a drone that is purpose-built for racing. Racing drones are often custom-built by the users from off-the-shelf parts, not purchased as a complete system.

The company did introduce DJI Goggles in 2017 that are compatible with several different drone models, but the solution was not deemed ideal in the drone racing world.

However, The Verge reports that it is important to note that racing drones crash regularly. They go faster and are more difficult to control than drones used for commercial and photo missions. Custom-built drones are easier to repair following a particularly aggressive race that might lead to a crash.

No images or specs have been released for any potential racing drone from DJI. We'll just have to wait and see what the company does with its technology.
