Parliamentary Discussion, Strike on Olympic Airways

It's unlikely that anyone will be flying Greece's state-owned Olympic Airways today (Thursday). The Parliament is discussing just how to divest itself of the money-losing property; and just to make things interesting, the airline's unions, under the OSPA umbrella organization, have called a one-day strike.

The government seems to have plans to get out of the airline business, and organized labor is against what it sees as a certain foreshortening of "social rights;" and it's a safe bet that private-sector pay won't match public-sector pay, either. So, if the government gets rid of the airline, and it falls under professional management, many things the current workers take for granted could be in jeopardy.

The alternative, many in government and in the private sector try to remind the strikers, could be a whole new (private) airline, or reliance on foreign carriers.
