Five Lost In Nevada SH-60F Mishap

Helo Struck Power Line In Desert

US Navy officials confirm an SH-60F Sea Hawk helicopter struck a power line during a training flight Monday night, and crashed in a remote area of northern Nevada. All five crewmembers onboard were lost.

The helo -- assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 7, based in Jacksonville, FL but flying out of Naval Air Station Fallon outside Reno -- went down in rugged desert terrain, about 10 miles west of Austin.

"The helicopter was on a combat search and rescue exercise," base spokesman Zip Upham told The Associated Press. The Sea Hawk's crew was on a monthlong training mission at Fallon, which is the home of the Navy's Strike and Air Warfare Center.

Military aircraft initially located the crash site at 9:40 pm local time, 15 minutes after the helicopter crashed. A Navy UH-1N Huey search-and-rescue helicopter dispatched from Naval Air Station Fallon arrived at the scene at about 10:15 pm.

Identities of the crew members have been withheld, pending the notification of their relatives.
