Experimental Helicopter Pilot Fatally Injured In Montana Accident

Aircraft Impacted A Hangar At Billings Logan International Airport

The pilot of an experimental helicopter was fatally injured Wednesday when the aircraft impacted a hangar facility at Billings Logan International Airport (KBIL).

The Billings Gazette reports that FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said that the aircraft was an RW-1 Scorpion helicopter. The pilot, identified only as a 74-year-old Billings man, was the only person on board.

In a news release, airport director Kevin Ploehn said that there were no witnesses to the accident, and "details are still being sorted out."

He later added in an interview that someone in another hangar heard the accident, but the pilot was not in communication with air traffic control when it occurred.
