Mock-Hijacking Staged In India

"Ladies And Gentlemen, Remain In Your Seats -- Just Kidding"

It was supposed to be a drill, but not everyone was in on the act.

The Indian-owned Alliance jetliner was on the tarmac in New Delhi when the pilot reportedly flashed a hand sign indicating he was being threatened by a hijacker. commandos rushed to the aircraft and surrounded it. Only then were the elite troops informed it was just a drill.

"We carried out the drill to check the alertness of security forces," Civil Aviation Secretary K. Roy Pal was quoted as saying.

It was the second such incident at New Delhi in as many months.

On August 20, troops at New Delhi's international airport surrounded an aircraft headed for the embattled Kashmir region after the pilot reported his flight was being hijacked. The report turned out to have been in error.
