The Duluth News Tribune reports that Mrs. Sullivan told television station KOMO in Seattle that her husband had reported that one of the cylinders in engine was not working properly, but that mechanics had checked it during the airplane's annual last month.

NTSB investigator Kristi Dunks told the paper that Sullivan had declared an emergency just before the airplane went down, and that he was attempting to make the airport at Morton, WA about two miles from the crash site. Sullivan reported that he had no power. Dunks also said the airplanes emergency parachute had been deployed, but it was not clear if it was pre-or post-crash.

Mrs. Sullivan also told the station that her husband had sent her a text message from the airplane, saying he was experiencing stronger than expected headwinds and might be later than he had originally anticipated.
