'Black Ravens' Prowler Down Over Oregon; All Four Onboard Safe

EA-6B Was On Training Flight

An EA-6B Prowler (file photos of type, right and below) from Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 135, the "Black Ravens" based at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, went down Friday morning during a training mission.

Officials report all four crew members survived after ejecting from the aircraft, which crashed about 25 miles east of a bombing range outside Boardman, OR frequently used by Navy training crews.

Umatilla County Emergency Management spokeswoman Cheryl Seigal told the Snohomish County Herald two military aircraft were in the area at the time of the accident.

The plane was flying low, but there is "not typically anything in the area that perhaps it would have hit," Seigal said. Four parachutes were seen opening, and the crewmembers were reportedly taken to a hospital in Pendleton, OR.

First deployed to Whidbey in 1971, the EA-6B Prowler is a radar-jamming jet used to confuse or disable ground missile sites. Beginning in 1972, the aircraft saw extensive duty over Vietnam.
