AMA Drone Report 04.25.19: Google/Wing Cert, World Record FLT, Sheriff Rescue

Also: Miracle Flights, Drone Workforce Solutions, AMA Friends Of The Foundation, XPONENTIAL 2019

The FAA has awarded the first air carrier certification to a drone delivery company, Google’s Wing Aviation.

The certification paved the way for Wing Aviation to begin commercial package delivery in Blacksburg, VA. Wing partnered with the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership and Virginia Tech, as one of the participants in the Transportation Department’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program. Wing demonstrated that its operations met the FAA’s rigorous safety requirements to qualify for an air carrier certificate. This is based on extensive data and documentation, as well as thousands of safe flights conducted in Australia over the past several years. A flight time of 12 hours, 7 minutes and 5 seconds was officially recorded by South Korean company MetaVista as it successfully broke the multi rotor UAV World Record of flight time. The MetaVista team used a 6-liter (1.5 gallon) liquid hydrogen cylinder and Intelligent Energy’s 800W Fuel Cell Power Module to power the UAV. A missing elderly man was found in a wooded area after Collier County FL Sheriff’s Office deputies used drones to track his whereabouts. The 77-year-old man, who has health and mental challenges, became lost for more than two hours after he wandered from his residence. The Sheriff’s Office was contacted after the man failed to return home. Patrol deputies, assisted by the K9 Unit, Agriculture Unit, Traffic Unit and Investigations Division, launched a ground search, while the Aviation Unit searched by air.
