New Aviation High School In WA Behind Schedule

Will Not Be Ready Until Second Week Of The School Year

When it’s finished, it will be a state-of-the-art $43.5 million high school that will allow students to pursue careers in aviation. But it's not going to be ready for the first day of classes September 4.

That's the not-so-good news. The better news is that Raisbeck Aviation High School in Tukwila, WA, will open just a week late. Construction delays forced officials to give students an extra week of summer vacation, according to Seattle television station KING. The school will be ready to accept students September 9.

Construction crews are still putting the finishing touches on the building, and then safety inspections have to be completed. That could take "days" because of the size of the building, according to Highline Public School officials.

The school has been in existence since 2004, and is thought to have been the first college-prep aviation-themed high school ever established in the country. It has been operating in temporary facilities for the past nine years. The new dedicated location is on property owned by the Museum of Flight.
