Safari Helicopter Continues To Upgrade

Stronger Components In The Clutch, Tail Frame

By David Juwel

When you buy a new car, you'll find that every year they improve upon the model until, after several years, it just about becomes perfect. The Ford Taurus was like that. This process worked so well for Ford that when they pulled the Taurus out of their line-up, there was a loud clamor from the public, which caused Ford to put the Taurus back into service. That's an excellent idea for the aviation industry, unfortunately, not everyone in the industry does that.

Safari Helicopter's is a company that does. Their latest improvements include a redesigned tail frame, a new spraque clutch, and conformal vortex generators.

The TailFrame - They removed a portion of the tail frame that was causing resonance, then redesigned it and beefed the tubing up.

The Spraque Clutch - The spraque clutch was beefed up to where the clutch TBO has risen dramatically. They redesigned the races that the clutch rides in. It is more robust, handles more torque and its a sealed system for protection.

The Conformal Vortex Generators - They also added conformal vortex generators to the leading edges of the rotor blades. It replaces the leading edge tape, allowing for greater blade efficiency, lower manifold pressure, less drag, more lift, and reduced fuel burn.
