NBAA Statement on May 11 Cessna Incident Over Washington, DC, Airspace

"It is difficult to understand how the pilot of a Cessna 150 strayed into the restricted airspace over Washington, DC, and it is regrettable that the pilot's apparent loss of situational awareness prompted the evacuation of government buildings and caused security responses to be set off.

However, the event demonstrated that the system works. The Cessna was promptly identified by security officials, military fighter jets escorted the plane to a nearby airport, and law enforcement authorities detained the pilot and co-pilot."

These procedures were put in place following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. They are part of a myriad of voluntary and regulatory changes the industry and government have made to strengthen airport and airspace security, while still allowing for mobility of aircraft. It is a system that works."
