Etihad Selects Jeppesen EFB

Finds Fuel Economy Increase of 1.4% When Using Routing, Reduced Wear

Etihad Airways announced the integration of the Jeppesen FliteDeck Advisor system into their fleet of 787 Dreamliners in an effort to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro is the Boeing subsidiary's more corporate, upscale EFB application that offers many of the usual benefits of tablet apps: moving airport maps with granular, updated information for quick reference; en route weather information with satellite coverage; and routing assistance using Jeppesen's secret sauce. The product differentiates itself with a more carrier-focused tack, custom tailoring available information through the addition of company data like frequencies, phone numbers, and hangar information. Best of all, and the deciding factor in the Etihad's selection of the suite, was the fuel economy improvements found when using it - 1.4% between their fleet of test aircraft.

Unlike other, mainstream EFB's, FliteDeck offers a lot of on-the-ground airport information, identifying all the usual features like hotspots, taxiways, et cetera - but with specific directions to parking stands, de-icing pads, and gates.

Etihad will be able to use their own performance data to determine optimal runway exits, where the app combines its proprietary Boeing Onboard Performance Tools to predict stopping distances and brake cooling times needed for optimal service life. For Etihad, the largest operator of 787s with a grand total of 39 in service, maximum efficiency of wear and tear is a helpful cost cutting measure.

“We have been very pleased with the fuel and cost savings we have achieved with FliteDeck Advisor,” said Sulaiman Yaqoobi, vice president of Flight Operations, Etihad Airways. “FliteDeck Advisor was tested as part of the Etihad Greenliner program, and it is great to now see it deployed across the 787 fleet, helping Etihad achieve efficiency gains and reduce CO2 emissions.”
