Navy Official Says F-35 Production Should Be Slowed

Cites Flaws Uncovered By Fatigue Testing Of Early Aircraft

A Navy Vice Admiral says Lockheed Martin and the Department of Defense need to put the brakes on production of the F-35 JSF after fatigue testing revealed potential flaws in the design.

Vice Admiral David Venlet told AOL Defense that the initial assumptions about the JSFs design were a "miscalculation." He said that recent revelations that some parts would have to be redesigned and replaced to give the airplane its originally-estimated service life would significantly drive up the cost of an already-expensive airplane.

Still, Venlet did not say the program should be scrapped, just tempered. He said for the question is not whether to build the airplane, but how many to build and at what rate of production.
