Transatlantic Flight Bound For Chicago Diverted To Maine

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 08.25.06 1420 EDT: Not again... for the second time today, a security issue has arisen on a transatlantic commercial airline flight.

The Associated Press reports an American Airlines 767-300, operating as Flight 55 from Manchester to Chicago, was diverted to Bangor International Airport Friday for security reasons. An FAA spokeswoman declined to elaborate on just what, exactly, the security issue was.

Federal agents are at the scene in Bangor, and passengers are being interviewed by authorities.

"We're responding to determine the cause of the diversion," FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said.

Bangor International is a popular emergency stop for transatlantic flights, as it is the first large US airport for incoming flights from Europe and the last for outgoing flights. Planes experiencing mechanical issues, containing unruly passengers or security threats often divert to Bangor before proceeding to their scheduled destinations.
