Alaska DNR To Allow Helicopters To Assist In Hydroelectric Dam Research

Will Be Conducting Fish Studies, Taking Stream Flow Measurements

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will allow Nuvista Electric Cooperative to use a helicopter as it researches the feasibility of placing a hydroelectric dam at Chikuminuk Lake in the Wood Tikchik State Park.

The electric cooperative applied to use the helicopter for such activities as studying fish and raptor populations and movements as well as stream flow in the area.

The decision to allow helicopters to land in the park was made by the DNR June 28th, according to a report from radio station KDLG in Dillingham, AK. An appeal was filed by Tim Troll of the Bristol Bay Heritage Land Trust and Bethel, AK defense attorney Myron Angstman. They said the use of the helos in the wilderness area of the state park was contrary to laws that govern the park.

DNR said in denying the appeal that the use of the aircraft will help present a better overall understanding of the park, and is therefore appropriate.

The decision is final, and the research can now proceed.
