Two Fatally Injured In Edgewater, FL Mid-Air Collision

NTSB Says Accident Aircraft Were Two Of Six Practicing Formation Flying

Two of six aircraft practicing formation flying Saturday near Edgewater, FL collided in mid-air, resulting in the fatal injury of the two pilots on the aircraft.

Television station WKMG reports that the two aircraft, a Cessna 170 and a Grumman American AA5B came down in a wooded area west of I-95. The NTSB secured the accident scene.

At a news conference Sunday, NTSB investigator Todd Gunther said that a witness observed the six aircraft formation pass over the Interstate before the collision. All of the aircraft reportedly came from Spruce Creek Airport.

An NTSB spokeswoman said in a written statement that the aircraft collided about three miles north-northwest of Massey Airport in New Smyrna Beach, FL at about 0900 local time.

The two pilots, a man and a woman, have not been identified by authorities.
