Yak-52 Down During Airshow In Poland

Airplane Entered A Flat Spin Before Impacting The Vistula River

The German pilot of a Yak-52 was fatally injured Saturday during the 7th Air Picnic in Plock, Poland. The pilot was not identified, but described as a former pilot for Lufthansa.

The Aviationist blog reports that videos of the accident posted by people attending the event show the plane entering a classic flat spin, and though the pilot managed to get into a nose-down attitude, which is a common recovery procedure, he was unable to avoid impacting the river in about 26 feet of water.

A second accident involving a Yak-52 occurred June 14 in Vietnam during a military training flight, according to the blog. In that accident, the aircraft impacted the side of a mountain in central Khanh Hoa. One of the two pilots on board died in the impact, while the other died while being transported to a hospital, according to a local official.
