$30,000 Fine Levied For False Crash Report

Colorado Man Learns You Should Not Drink And Dial ... 911

50 search and rescue personnel in La Plata County, Colorado, were scrambled after a man called 911 and reported that his arm had been severed in a plane crash, and that up to 12 people had been killed.

The Durango Herald reports that the caller, 59-year-old Edward Pretzer, was visibly intoxicated when he was arrested, and authorities say they plan to try to recover the entire $30,000 price tag of the search.

Pretzer told Dan Patterson, an investigator with the La Plata County Sheriff's office that he thought he was talking to a friend when he made the 911 call. He had been very specific about the location of the alleged crash, and potential rescuers frantically searched along dirt roads just inside a Ute Indian reservation for the wreckage. None was found, and Pretzer was located using GPS co-ordinates from the 911 call.

$30,000 is the estimate for the cost of personnel, fuel and other resources used in the search. County officials say they will attempt to recoup the costs in civil court.
