Southwest Operates First 737 MAX Flight With All-Female Crew

Company Described The Flight As 'Unmanned"

A Southwest Airlines Flight from San Francisco to St. Louis last Wednesday had the distinction of being the first operated by the carrier on its new 737 MAX airliner using an all-female crew. Southwest described the flight as being "Unmanned."

The Deseret News reports that, according to CBS news, women make up only 6.7 percent of the total pilot population in the U.S, as well as less than 10 percent of all engineers and mechanics.

The crew consisted of two pilots and four flight attendants. They took photos of themselves aboard the airplane.

It is not the first time an all-female crew has operated a Southwest flight, though it was not purposeful and was done without publicity. On the company website, Southwest says "it’s not uncommon to see an entire flight crew of women.”

Southwest is the launch customer for the 737 MAX, which went into service October 1.
