Airborne 03.02.20: Starship SN1 Explodes, Sharing Flt Expense, April 1st Edition

Also: Aerospace Center Of Excellence, Airline Seating Petition, Boeing T-7A, MQ-9 Reaper Program Ended

It is not unusual for SpaceX to aggressively test new concepts to their limits... and sometimes far beyond.

A new prototype of the Starship, SN1, imploded during a pressure test at the Boca Chica, TX, test facility. SpaceX is, admittedly a little more daring with its test programs and rarely sees this kind of thing as a true failure... but simply an obstacle to surmount... Still; the ensuing implosion was pretty spectacular. This was reportedly a liquid nitrogen pressure test. The pressurized tank suffered a structural failure and the resulting energy emitted by the force of the initial implosion, and subsequent explosion, scattered debris for several hundred yards -- in all directions. There has been a lot of discussion over the past several years about pilots sharing expenses for a flight, particularly if they have posted any kind of notice on the Internet about where they are going and offering to share expenses with someone else for the trip. Now, the FAA has released an Advisory Circular (AC) outlining specifically when a pilot may ask a passenger for gas money. According to the AC, private pilots operating under part 61 may not engage in common carriage unless they are operating in accordance with an Air Carrier Certificate or Operating Certificate issued under part 119. The AC offers guidance as to when that line is crossed. For over two decades, the ANN crew takes a day each year to poke fun at the aviation world, and ourselves, via our Annual April First edition. It gets tougher and tougher to ‘out-crazy’ ourselves each time, but 2020 appears to be one of the best yet  -- though it's going to be a bit complicated separating the April 1st stuff from the early coverage of Sun ‘n Fun 2020. With that in mind, we’d like to invite you to suggest April 1st ideas... or topics that truly deserve a little special attention... and maybe getting lampooned for a bit. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
