Canadian Space Agency Narrows Astronaut Candidates Down To 72

Nearly 4,000 People Applied To Join Next Generation Of Canadian Astronauts

The Canadian Space Agency has narrowed the pool of candidates for its next astronaut class from 3,772 to 72 ... with only two slots available in its program.

The Canadian Press reports that a military fighter pilot, a NASA navigation engineer, and a doctor specializing in brain and spinal injuries are among the candidates who made the initial cut.

According to the Canadian Space Agency, Canada's next astronauts are required to have an academic background in science or technology, excellent health and outstanding qualities and skills. They must also live in Canada, or be Canadian citizens living abroad.

The 72 on the short list will undergo a rigorous training process lasting almost a year, and will include interviews, written exams and a range of mental and physical fitness tests.

Information about each of the candidates has been posted on the Canadian Space Agency website.
