Daher Unveils Next-Gen TBM 960

Sun 'n Fun Premiers The Best TBM Release Yet

Daher brought their brand new TBM 960 to Lakeland, Florida, showing off the very 1st aircraft to roll off the assembly line. 

The 960 is described as "quintessential TBM", by Daher exec Nicolas Chabbert. It's the 5th iteration of the "very fast turboprop aircraft" and represents the very best the breed has to offer. The secret sauce this time around is a wholesale improvement towards digital throttle control courtesy of a new electronic Engine and Propeller Electronic Control System. 

The TBM 960 now boasts the same speed of the TBM family while lowering fuel consumption to 57 gallons per hour at a 308-knot cruise, a 10% increase in fuel economy of its 4th generation predecessor. Its core is the PT6E-66XT powerplant, driving a 5-blade Raptor composite prop. With its control system, the engine startup sequence is fully automated after a single-switch activation. Similar one-touch convenience is found in the e-throttle, using a single forward position from takeoff to landing. Pilot workload is reduced throughout all phases of flight, integrating all functions needed to protect engine life and optimize performance. 

The Raptor is part and parcel of the TBM's in-flight experience, being "specifically designed to reduce weight" and "improve the TBM 960’s takeoff distance, climb, and cruise speed." Designed to limit noise and vibration, Daher says the prop only contributes 76.4 dB to the sound of the takeoff, despite being at maximum power. The noise level is a nod to the TBM's role as a high-speed executive runabout, vacation escape transport, and other roles that will see it operate in regions where keeping a low, discreet profile are encouraged. 

Similar improvements throughout the flight experience tighten up the in-flight convenience, comfort, and livability of the TBM 960. An improved flight envelope monitoring system, stability protection suite, and emergency autoland system all combine to boost safety even during single-pilot flights. For passengers, the "Prestige" cabin extends the digital theme throughout the aircraft, allowing those aboard to enjoy a revised environmental control system, LED ambiance strip lighting, and dimmable windows. Of course, no premium flight experience is complete without the full suite of USB power receptacles, which Daher thoughtfully included in both USB-A and -C variations. The TBM 960 is undergoing certification with the FAA, and has been certified by the EASA. Suggested retail pricing starts at around $4.5 million in basic trim.
