Airplane Down At Jakarta Air Show

Two Pilots Fatally Injured In The Accident

Two Indonesian pilots were fatally injured Saturday when the Swiss-made AS 202 Bravo airplane they were flying during the Bandung Air Show went down during the performance, impacting a building. No one on the ground was injured.

A witness who is also a pilot told the Associated Press that the plane appeared to be flying too low during its aerobatic routine. The plane reportedly spun "out of control" before it hit the structure, an Indonesian Air Force logistics warehouse.

The Jakarta Globe reports that the pilot was retired Air Vice Marshall Nurman Lubis. The co-pilot was retired Col. Tonny Haryono. Both were reportedly members of the Indonesian Aero Sport Federation (FASI) who regularly flew the airplane that went down.

The accident occurred at Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung. The warehouse that was hit by the plane was evacuated.

The airplane had been donated to FASI by the Air Force. The show's organizers cancelled all flying demonstrations following the accident, but the static displays remained open for the weekend.
