Floating Airport Idea Out To Sea?

San Diego Group Wants To Replace Lindbergh Field With Offshore Facility

One of the biggest problems in trying to build a new airport(unless you live near Denver) is real estate -- there just isn't enough of it to go around. But a San Diego group has an idea: build the airport out at sea.

The group is called Euphlotea and it wants to build the new airport just off the California coast between the Orange County line and the Mexican border. Last week, members demonstrated their idea in a research pool at the Offshore Model Basin, a company that designs offshore ship terminals and oil rigs.

San Diego officials turned down a similar idea two years ago, so Euphlotea wants to bypass elected officials and put the idea straight to the voters as a ballot initiative.
