Gone West: Uli Derickson

Heroine Of Hijacked TWA 847

We've just learned that Uli Derickson, considered a hero by many of the passengers aboard a TWA flight hijacked from Athens to Beirut and besieged for 17 days, died February 18th. A victim of cancer, Derickson was 60.

Universally praised for her cool in the midst of a terribly dangerous situation, Derickson served as an impromptu go-between in the standoff between hijackers and Lebanese authorities during the 1985 hijacking. She's credited with shielding two of her passengers from the Shi'ite Muslim hijackers. Both of them had Jewish-sounding names and might have been targeted for death.

While one US Navy diver was killed during the seige, Derickson was hailed for saving the lives of several other passengers aboard Flight 847. She was later awarded the US Silver Medal of Honor and the Legion of Valor's Silver Cross.

Derickson died at her home in Tucson, AZ.
