Pilot Safe Following F/A-18 Bailout Off VA Coast

Coast Guard Pulls Airman From Ocean

The pilot of a US Navy F/A-18 was pulled to safety Thursday, after his fighter went down in the Atlantic Ocean off the Virginia coast.

Military officials report the pilot was rescued by the US Coast Guard after he ejected from the fighter at approximately 1600 EDT Thursday, about 70 miles from the coast.

The Coast Guard was dispatched when the Navy lost contact with the jet off the coast of North Carolina, according to USCG spokesman Christopher Evanson.

US Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. David Nunnally told The Associated Press the pilot was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was being treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The F/A-18 was part of VFA-87, the "Golden Warrior" based at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach.
