American Airlines Adds Even More MAX 10s to Fleet

Order Gratefully Accepted By Boeing

American Airlines placed an order for 85 of the troubled 737-10 MAX model despite its hullabaloo with the blocked entry plug depressurizing in flight.

Despite some pretty high profile black eyes for Boeing's quality procedures lately, American threw them some business for the lengthened narrowbody jet, which could well have been had at some pretty sweet deals at the moment. American decided to swap 30 of its previous orders for MAX 8 aircraft into orders for the MAX 10, meaning the carrier is now committed to a total of 115 of the aircraft.

As if that weren't enough, they also snagged options to purchase 75 additional 737-10s. Whatever the deals were behind the scenes, they must have been good enough to convince American to take the PR hit on acquiring the troubled (to John Q. Public, at least) model. American's long track record with Boeing means they know it will ultimately be made right, with the public imagination fading in time - someday only the most strident air-nerds will remember the issues anyways. The order was gratefully accepted by Boeing brass, with CEO Stan Deal personally weighing in on the sale.

"We deeply appreciate American Airlines' trust in Boeing and its confidence in the 737 MAX family. American's selection of the 737-10 will provide even greater efficiency, commonality and flexibility for its global network and operations. Our team here at Boeing is committed to delivering on this new order and supporting American's strategic growth with one of the industry's largest and most modern fleets."

"Over the past decade, we have invested heavily to modernize and simplify our fleet, which is the largest and youngest among U.S. network carriers," said American's CEO Robert Isom. "These orders will continue to fuel our fleet with newer, more efficient aircraft so we can continue to deliver the best network and record-setting operational reliability for our customers."
