Former POW Searches For His Wings Buried In Germany

He Buried Them At A Farm House, And Wanted Them Back

65 years ago, 1st Lt. Bernerd Harding of New Hampshire was huddled in the basement of a German farmhouse, captured by the farmer who lived there. A bomber pilot, Lt. Harding was concerned that he might be treated particularly severely, or killed, if his captors knew he was a pilot, so he buried his wings in the basement's dirt floor.

Now at 90 years old, he'd like to have them back, and Vermont television station WCAX reports that he traveled to Germany in an attempt to locate the house, and the wings.

He searched four houses in a small town southwest of Berlin, but was unable to locate them. Still, Harding said, just traveling back to Germany and speaking to people who remembered that day was worth the trip.
