Hilton Software Recommending Caution With iOS 5 Upgrade

'Feature' In New Operating System Could Cause Charts To Be Deleted

The Apple iOS 5 upgrade released last week has a design feature that could cause problems for users running apps like WingX which store large amounts of data on the devices.

According to multiple media reports including one from the online site IT World, the new OS, which makes heavy use of the Cloud for data transfer and syncronization, will automatically delete apps and files that are stored locally for offline use if the device determines it needs more memory ... files like the charts and airport information used by WingX. These files are often not backed up from the device, so if they're deleted, they're gone.

In an e-mail sent to ANN, Dr. Hilton Goldstein says that while the good news is that WingX Pro7 is iOS 5 compatible, it is not safe from the issues caused by deletion of data. "Therefore, you could get to the airport and find that WingX Pro7 and/or its databases (e.g. sectionals) have just disappeared," he says.

As a result, Dr. Goldstein is recommending that WingX Pro7 users delay upgrading to iOS 5 "until Apple stops deleting your apps and data."
