Airbus Tab For Wing Cracks: $132 Million

A380 Fleet, Production Will Need Fixes

The Airbus A380 is already upside-down on its development costs. Now, a German magazine reports the company may incur additional costs of $132 million to check and repair cracks found in wing rib feet on the fleet. Just repairing the planes already flying may cost over $92 million.

According to Reuters, Der Spiegel reported Sunday that altering production of the aircraft to avoid the problem in the future accounts for the remainder of the total cost expected. The magazine cited anonymous sources in the industry, some within Airbus.

Airbus has stressed there is no immediate safety-of-flight issue, but European regulators disagree, and have ordered inspections for the entire A380 fleet.
