Summit Aviation Achieves CH-47 Chinook Support Milestone

Has 'Depopulated' 200 Chinook Helicopters

Summit Aviation, a Greenwich AeroGroup company, has completed its 200th depopulation of a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter.

The program, which began at Summit in 2002, is designed to harvest parts from the United States Army’s “D” model aircraft to be installed onto new “F” or “G” models. The process starts with the removal of the major components such as rotor blades, engines, and transmissions followed by all other parts that will be used on the modified aircraft. After removal, approximately one thousand components and parts are cleaned, tagged and shipped to their next destination.

“We began this journey many years ago with Boeing’s Integrated Defense Systems,” said General Manager of Summit Aviation Ralph Kunz. “And today, our team is proud of the contribution we have made to the Chinook Program.”

Kunz added that Summit’s streamlining of the induction process over the years has resulted in a 20-percent reduction in cost to the program. Boeing recently awarded a second multi-year contract to Summit that will continue through 2018.

By the conclusion of the “D” model aircraft program, Summit will have inducted 295 aircraft over a 16-year period.
