Embraer Completes Firefighting C-390 Tests

Modular MAFFS II System Adds Another Niche to Multi-Mission Millennium’s Resume

Embraer has completed the majority of its certification campaign for the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System as installed on the C-390 Millennium.

The Brazilian manufacturer completed testing of the system, MAFFS II, at their São Paulo, home. The test included several in-flight water drops, testing the system's ability to communicate with the aircraft and deliver its payload on target. While in flight, the MAFFS II-equipped C-390 was assessed for handling, controllability, and maneuverability during the mission. Embraer says that the outcome was good, allowing the firefighting aircraft to pass another milestone in the certification campaign for the Brazilian Military Certification Authority. Once complete, the system will be available for current owners of the C-390.

Embraer's multi-mission C-390 provides a solid base for the firefighting aircraft, offering mobility, capacity, rapid reconfiguration, high uptime, and reduced operational costs compared to older legacy aircraft of a similar use case. The MAFFS II equipment interfaces directly with the aircraft's Cargo Handling System, being rapidly installed in the cargo compartment of the aircraft using its included trailer. Even easier for installation and operation, the system only requires aircraft power to operate. It’s anyone’s guess as to how much firefighting market share the Embraer system can nab from competing legacy aircraft, but those writing the checks tend to appreciate a “swiss army aircraft” that can pack as many missions as possible into its resume.

Firefighting has been a constant theme this summer, a result of a series of highly visible wildfires the world over and an aging firefighting fleet. Last month, the International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations urged the ICAO to establish suitable certification standards for such aircraft. While those probably won’t become effective any time soon,  the industry has, for the first time in a while, shown signs of growth. Embraer has yet to publish a final release date for the firefighting C-390 or MAFFS II system while it stands in the midst of its certification testing.
