Sierra Nevada Corp. Celebrates 10 Years In Space Technologies Manufacturing

Proudly Marking A Decade Of Growing Space Manufacturing Operations In Durham, NC

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) Space Systems is proudly marking 10 years of growing space manufacturing operations in Durham, NC. SNC’s Space Systems Durham facility produces mission critical components for all sectors of the space industry. The Durham facility, one of 30 SNC U.S. locations, designs, builds and tests high technology electromechanical precision devices. These products include hardware such as gimbals, actuators, and motors for satellites, robotic rovers and interplanetary missions. To date the SNC Durham facility has executed over 100 projects that directly supported more than 30 missions, including the Mars Rovers, SNC’s own Dream Chaser spacecraft, Phoenix Mars Lander, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and other missions for NASA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), DoD and the commercial market.

“The rate of growth of our Durham operations over the past decade has been an unbelievable achievement,” said Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president and head of SNC’s Space Systems. “SNC Durham has been able to accomplish this due to its strong leadership, technology workforce, connection to the local universities, and our overall commitment to total customer satisfaction. SNC believes that maintaining strong localized facilities, like our Durham center, is the best way to attract and retain the most talented staff and provide the best products to our clients. I have had the pleasure of watching this facility grow significantly during the past decade and I look forward to continued success for this team as we continue to expand our presence in Durham and grow our national footprint.”

SNC’s Durham office was established in 2004 to design and manufacture motors and actuators for the space industry. SNC’s employee base in Durham has over 20 years average experience and its employees are known leaders in mechanical or electrical engineering disciplines. SNC Durham office has experienced over 40 percent growth in the past three years and current orders support a continuation of this growth rate for the foreseeable future.

“Ten years is an incredible milestone for our team,” said Charlie Hodges, director of programs for SNC’s Space Systems in Durham. “In 2013, we achieved 100 percent on-time delivery for every item that was due. I don’t know of any organization within the space industry that has attained the goal of 100 percent on-time delivery for a full year. Thanks to exceptional team effort and paying careful attention to efficiency, we are able to provide our customers with an unparalleled experience.”
