Apparent Landing Gear Issue Sends Plane Back To BOS

Midwest Airlines B717 Lands Safely After Circling... And Yes, It's On Tape

In a shower of sparks and before the watchful eyes of television cameras, a Midwest Airlines Boeing 717 made a safe landing just before 10 pm EST Tuesday night at Logan International after an unknown problem was discovered with the aircraft's landing gear.

The aircraft (file photo of type, below) with 89 people reportedly onboard landed on all three wheels, but a shower of sparks came from atop the right maingear as the plane rolled down the runway.

The pilot declared an emergency shortly after takeoff in response to witness reports of sparks eminating from the rear of the aircraft as it took off from Boston en route to Milwaukee. The plane circled Boston for approximately an hour as it burned off fuel, and as crews attempted to isolate the problem, according to Reuters.

Ten minutes after landing, passengers were still onboard the aircraft as ground crews were called in to either transport passengers to the gate, or tow the aircraft to the terminal.
