FAA Updates Super Bowl LVI Safety Plan

Airmen Advised to Do Their Homework If Flying to the Game

The Federal Aviation Administration has drawn attention to the special procedures surrounding the upcoming Los Angeles area for the Super Bowl held on February 13.

The SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California will receive special protections and Temporary Flight Instructions with a No Drone Zone to limit flight activity before, during, and after the game.  The restrictions are serious business, listed as a national security concern, but that level of importance has led to a series of assists from the agency.

Airmen planning on operations within the region should familiarize themselves with the restrictions, including the game-day TFR which goes into effect at 14:30 local (PST). Its ring will cover 30 nm centered around the stadium itself which extends from ground level up to 18,000 feet. It is tentatively set to expire at 20:30, but could be extended should conditions warrant it. Drone activity is prohibited in the area, and could be penalized with the same things faced by pilots violating the TFR. The Los Angeles airspace, already a demandingly busy area, will see tremendous traffic in the weeks leading up to the game, with special procedures in effect from February 6-14.

The FAA has released a series of videos with actual runway approaches and taxiing footage for local areas, replete with diagrams and special attention items. The assistance is helpful for pilots planning their trip for the game, especially for pre-flight preparation for the sometimes complex and demanding taxiway layout at larger airports. Parking is limited at many airports, and reservation programs are in effect.
