Gone West: Rostislav Belyakov, Designer Of MiG Jets

Was Unknown To The Public Until Collapse Of The Soviet Union

The man called the chief designer of MiG fighter jets has reportedly passed away at the age of 94.

Rostislav Belyakov became MiG's chief designer in 1969, according to a report from the Associated Press. He died Friday in Moscow of an unspecified illness, according to the report.

Among the airplanes designed by Belyakov and his team were the MiG-23, the MiG-25, and the MiG-29, considered to have been primary fighters for the Soviet, and later Russian Air Force. He joined the company in 1941, and had become a deputy chief designer in 1957.

Belyakov's death was reported in a statement from the company. He had been unknown to the public until the Soviet Union collapsed, but had been quietly presented with multiple state awards and honors while he was with the company.
