Trig’s Mandate-Ready ADS-B Solution Is In The Works

Company Developing A Lower-Cost Solution To Meet 2020 Requirements

The search by pilots for a cost-effective ADS-B Out solution that meets the FAA’s 2020 ADS-B mandate is just about to get easier, according to Trig Avionics. The company's TT31 and TT22 transponders can be installed in a GA aircraft today and with a software update will be 2020 ADS-B mandate ready. Andy Davis, CEO of Trig Avionics, unveiled the latest important step in Trig’s journey, offering pilots practical and affordable ADS-B technology.

“Only a few weeks ago Trig achieved FAA’s C166b certification for our TT31 and TT22 transponders," Davis said. "Installation of C166b compliant ADS-B transponders in the United States is subject to STC approval. Today I’m pleased to share that by the end of this month we’ll have STC approval of the first ‘mandate ready’ 1090ES ADS-B Out installation in a Part 23 airplane. This is another world first. Next month we’ll begin shipping our C166b transponder software, both in new units and as an upgrade option to existing Trig customers”

Trig partnered with Peregrine, based in Englewood, Colorado (KAPA) who managed the STC process with the FAA. Peregrine has a proven track record and an expert certification team who looked after the project, including the installation and flight testing of Trig equipment, to secure STC approval. Trig’s first STC integrates their TT31 transponder with a FreeFlight Systems 1201 WAAS/GPS sensor. The trial demonstrated how Trig equipment can work perfectly with other third party avionics. Further STC’s are planned, which will include other popular GPS units.

“We are quite proud to share that this STC has gone incredibly smoothly and we could not be any closer to receiving the final blessing from our friends at the FAA," said Bill Mongeau, Peregrine’s Director of Business Operations. "The flight testing, completed in March, for Trig’s first STC, went exceptionally well; all data-points gathered were what our analysis predicted and without challenge. Further, the installation and the performance of the integrated components have been totally problem-free and, from a human factors stand-point, a pleasure to work with. It is abundantly clear to our team at Peregrine that Trig are pioneers and it’s been an honor to work alongside them while evaluating the first mandate ready 1090ES ADS-B Out transponder, and FreeFlight’s WAAS/ GPS. The success of this initial trial proves that pilots can purchase and install a TT31 transponder and be ready for ADS-B in the very near future.”

“We are excited to have been a part of this STC program," said Jessica Power, Director of Marketing and Sales at FreeFlight Systems. "Our ... 1201 WAAS/GPS is a key component to making ADS-B a success in this program. Trig transponders are a great match with our FreeFlight 1201 WAAS/GPS sensor. FreeFlight and Trig have a proven ADS-B Out solution, so pilots should take this STC as a significant sign that our ADS-B technology is affordable and can be purchased and installed with confidence."
