North Dakota Town Backs Speculative Air Cargo Trailer Company

Some Would Like To See A Working Model First

The city of Minot, ND is planning to give a half million dollar incentive package to Heliplane of Minneapolis, a company which hopes to manufacture air cargo trailers.

The concept is that a commercial or military cargo aircraft could pull a trailer controlled by a UAS-style system, thereby increasing the cargo capacity of the aircraft. KXMB-TV reports that Heliplane plans to demonstrate the concept to U.S. Army officials in September, and will begin producing the trailers following that event.

The Minot City Council approved the incentive package, though some members said it was very risky to do so. Committing that money means that it might not be available for another project in the future.

Heliplane plans to manufacture the trailers in Minot. Alderman Dean Frantsvog said every project in which the city puts money carries at least some risk.
