Boeing to Collaborate on Augmented Reality Dogfighter Training

Upcoming F-15EX May Come Preloaded with Flight Simulator, Video Games (Not Really, But Kind Of)

Boeing has announced its collaboration with AR/VR specialist Red 6 to provide future aircraft with an integrated version of the firm’s augmented reality tech for advanced flight training and fighter simulation.

The addition of augmented reality to the flight training process is a first for the industry, and Boeing feels confident it is a perfect way forward to ensure “leading edge aerial dogfighting technology” and training for advanced tactical aircraft. The aviation industry has eyed virtual and augmented reality with interest in recent years, eager to defray costs anywhere it can during the all too expensive flight training process. The deal will prepare the way to integrate Red 6’s proprietary systems into next-gen Boeing aircraft. The Advanced Tactical Augmented Reality System (ATARS), and Augmented Reality Command and the Analytic Data Environment (ARCADE) are expected to be integrated into the T-7 and F-15EX platforms first, allowing pilots to interact with simulated aircraft, targets, threats, and situations during flight. 

Once in action, the suite should allow training wings to reduce the number of flight hours required to meet training objectives by replacing real world companion aircraft with simulated, intangible displays aboard the student’s aircraft. Pilots will not only be able to see, but interact with augmented reality aircraft, targets, and threats no matter where they stand, allowing for air-to-air and air-to-ground training without limitation. Whether reducing target infrastructure, flight instructors, or aggressor aircraft, the Red 6 system is shaping up to be a cost-cutter all around. Even now, prior to the integration, the company supports  air combat maneuvers, refueling, tactical formation and surface-to-air weapon engagements. Additionally, the simulated nature allows perfect post-flight analysis and review.

This agreement is the latest example of Boeing’s commitment to investing in technology and our drive to lead innovation in the aerospace and defense sectors,” said Dan Gillian, vice president and general manager of U.S. Government Services for Boeing Global Services.
