NASA Features SLS, Orion, Mars Mission At AirVenture

Agency Holding Multiple Forums During Event

NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion industry team are at EAA Airventure Oshkosh 2017 in Wisconsin this week to recognize local supplier companies and showcase the technologies that will launch humans into deep space.

The SLS and Orion team will be located in NASA’s building in Aviation Gateway Park, located at the northwest corner of Waukau Ave. and Knapp St., near the FAA control tower. The industry team’s booth will feature virtual reality of a rocket launch (you’re the astronaut!), a “build-it-and-launch-it” touch screen display, and a photo booth (again – you’re the astronaut!), as well as a wealth of information about what NASA is doing to further deep space exploration.
 
Hear from NASA and industry experts about humankind’s next steps in our solar system, and advancements in technologies and capabilities that will launch in just two years. Meet the men and women who are building the future of space travel.
 
“Space exploration has always served a purpose greater than exploring space in itself,” says Charlie Precourt, former NASA astronaut, current vice president and general manager of Orbital ATK Propulsion Systems Division and vice-chair of EAA. “Humans are destined to explore – it’s what we do. But by doing so, we bring new technology into the world that greatly benefits mankind.”
 
Join us Thursday, July 27, from 10-11:15 a.m. at Theater in the Woods for the “Journey to Mars is Underway!” forum, featuring former astronaut Charlie Precourt and other panelists from NASA and the industry team. This forum explores how NASA is inspiring a nation through deep space exploration. Right now we are building the launch vehicle and spacecraft that will take humans to deep space destinations – such as beyond the Moon and even Mars.

 
Also on Thursday, at 2:30 p.m. in Aviation Gateway Park, meet a group of “Women in Space” who are “Redefining Glamour” through the exciting, compelling work they are performing expanding our universe, opening our world – building tomorrow’s space travel capabilities to make us earth-independent. Join former NASA astronaut Janet Kavandi and several other professional women from NASA and industry and find out what it takes to work in the aerospace industry.
 
This year is particularly exciting to participate in EAA AirVenture with the Apollo astronaut reunion, featured Friday night at Theater in the Woods. Every day as industry partners we honor the legacy of the Apollo astronauts as we work to build on their tremendous efforts and sacrifices and work to send humans farther into space than we’ve ever gone before.
 
Four major industry players are building the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft for NASA’s exploration missions that will travel beyond the moon and into deep space. Boeing is designing, developing, producing and testing the rocket’s core and upper stages, as well as the avionics. Orbital ATK provides the five-segment solid rocket boosters that are the largest ever built for flight, together producing 7.2 million pounds of maximum thrust, boosting the SLS rocket off of the launch pad, and Aerojet Rocketdyne provides the reliable, flight-proven RS-25 and RL10 engines for the core and upper stage that carry SLS and Orion into orbit and on to deep space. Lockheed Martin is designing and building the Orion spacecraft, which will fly on top of SLS and transport astronauts farther into space than ever before.
