Also: UNLV Drone Pilot Certificate, Aria Insights, GA-ASI Collaboration Team, AUVSI XCELLENCE Awards

In light of a number of events and programs being curtailed due to the long-term government shutdown, it should come to no surprise that the stalemate is affecting the aviation community in a number of ways. AUVSI tells us that the much anticipated FAA UAS Symposium 2019 that was scheduled to take place in February is being postponed due to the government shutdown. The new conference dates will be announced after furloughed FAA employees return to work. Brian Wynne, president and CEO of AUVSI, issued the following statement regarding the FAA’s notice of proposed rulemaking on small UAS operations over people and the advanced notice of proposed rulemaking on the safe and secure operations of small UAS: "These FAA rulemakings will help advance the commercial UAS industry beyond the current regu

DJI introduced a new remote controller for its drones at CES 2019. The Smart Controller features an ultra-bright display screen and controls optimized for DJI drones. Using a 5.5” screen built into the controller itself, the Smart Controller allows pilots to quickly get their drone in the air without the need to connect a mobile device. It can be paired with DJI's newest drones including Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro which use DJI's OcuSync 2.0 video transmission system, displaying vivid images in Full HD resolution. UVify has unveiled its IFO swarm lightshow drone at CES in Las Vegas. After reviewing the existing lightshow swarm drones currently available, UVify decided to build the IFO swarm lightshow drone from the ground up to be "the longest flying and most efficient in its class." "easyJet has made a good start to the 2019 financial year with robust customer demand and ancillary sales, driving solid revenue generation. Airborne 01.21.19: SubSonex Upgraded!, Aero Club Of Atlanta, Snow v Citation

Also: Aerocor-Apex Aviation, Sikorsky Presents $ To Make-A-Wish, Chinese Av Mkt, JetBlue Donating

One of the coolest little sportplanes to ever work its way out of the feverish and somewhat convoluted imagination of Sonex Boss, John Monnett, is the SubSonex -- a single-seat kitjet powered by a small jet turbine engine... resulting in an aerobatic bird that is about as unique as anything currently offered. However; Sonex has upped the ante and announced a number of upgrades for their SubSonex kitjet program. Three new kit features are now included under current SubSonex pricing, and upgrade kits are available to existing customers. And... another aviation program gets hit by the government shutdown... with the industry wondering just how much damage will be done by the reduced staffing levels in most facets of aviation and aerospace government programs. The most recent casualty is the monthly Atlan

Also: Heathrow Drone Sighting, DJI Smart Remote Controller, Hydrogen Multi-Rotor UAV, Northwest UAV

Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, has announced Canada’s new rules for remotely piloted aircraft systems. The new rules, which will come into force on June 1, 2019, apply to all drone pilots flying drones between 250 grams and 25 kilograms that are operated within the drone pilot’s visual-line-of-sight, regardless of whether the drone is flown for fun, work or research. The new simplified rules reflect significant consultations with Canadians and the industry. The final regulations introduce two main categories of drone operation: basic and advanced. The categories are based on distance from bystanders and airspace rules. State Farm has reportedly been granted the first national waiver to any company in the U.S. by the FAA. The national waiver allows State Farm to conduct drone operat
