Airborne 08.23.19: 'Starman' Intercept?, Paraglider, World Aerobatics

Also: Boeing 737 MAX Panel, FAA Warns Aboout AOA Sensors, Mission To Jupiter, Aviation Coalition

Earlier this week, we said somewhat tongue-in-cheek that Elon Musk might try to recover the Tesla Roadster that was launched aboard the first Falcon Heavy launch and put it back on the road. And while that might not happen, it appears that Musk is at least mulling a mission to take some photos of his car in space. Musk said on Twitter Sunday that SpaceX might launch a photo mission to catch up with the roadster and take some pictures of Starman. But he did not offer any more details about how such a mission would be completed. Italian paraglider Joachim Oberhauser has won the 16th FAI World Paragliding Championship after a nail-biting two-week-long competition in Krushevo, North Macedonia, August 7-17, 2019. Oberhauser, 43, came out on top after 10 days of intense competition flying. He finished ahead

AMA Drone Report 08.22.19: AMA Reg Update, FAA Stakeholder Input, SkyPixel-DJI

Also: AIR PIX Selfie Drone, Another NIMBY City, Drone Food Delivery, 'Monumental' Drone LIDAR Map

While the Federal regulatory scene is getting a LOT of attention from AMA theses days, they remind us that they haven’t state and local regulatory issues go ignored. Many of the state legislative sessions have come to an end for the current cycle. This year, we continued to see many UAS-related proposals. However, as legislators begin to have a better understanding about the importance of our long-standing hobby, most of these bills were not overly concerning. Depending on the proposed restrictions or requirements, the AMA Government Affairs team has determined a level of engagement... The FAA has issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking to work with stakeholders on the administration of a new aeronautical knowledge test for recreational drone operators. Section 349 of the FAA Reauthorizat

Airborne-Unmanned 08.20.19: ROBOpilot First Flight, Amazon Petition, EHang Test

Also: Saildrone Circumnavigates Antarctica, Falcon Research Project, AUVSI Innovation Challenge, Drone Traffic Testing

The Air Force Research Laboratory and DZYNE Technologies successfully completed a two-hour initial flight of a revolutionary Robotic Pilot Unmanned Conversion Program called ROBOpilot Aug. 9 at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. “Imagine being able to rapidly and affordably convert a general aviation aircraft, like a Cessna or Piper, into an unmanned aerial vehicle, having it fly a mission autonomously, and then returning it back to its original manned configuration,” said Dr. Alok Das, Senior Scientist with AFRL’s Center for Rapid Innovation. ROBOpilot interacts with an aircraft the same way as a human pilot would. Amazon has petitioned the FAA for a waiver from several current rules governing UAVs to allow the company to begin delivery services with its MK27 drone.

Good News, Bad News... It's ALL News

As the preeminent online aviation news resource out there, the editorial staff at Aero-News sees a large number of news releases. We look at all of them, and can usually tell whether something merits publishing consideration within reading the first couple of paragraphs. Often, however, a new and innovative product can be overlooked because of the very words written to promote it, by the very people who created it.

Aero-News: Quote of the Day (08.25.19)

"GPS III SV02 is receiving and responding to commands just as planned. In the days ahead, we'll finish orbit raising to our operational slot and then send the satellite commands telling it to to deploy its solar arrays and antennas. Once we are set up, we'll begin on-orbit checkout and tests, including extensive signals testing with our advanced navigation payload." Source: Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin Space's vice president for Navigation Systems, adding some detail to the announcment that the US Air Force's second next-generation GPS III satellite, built by Lockheed Martin, is responding to commands, under control and now using its own internal propulsion system to get to orbit following its successful launch Thursday morning.
