Airborne 07.17.19: Sling NGT, Twin Tigers Aerobatic Team, Able Flight

Also: PilotVision Augmented Reality, Becker Avionics, Unleaded Avgas Replacement, Missing Man Stole Plane

At the typical ‘Joe’s Flight School’ seen at many American airports, the average flight training aircraft often doesn’t look so much different than the one your father might have flown… or your grandfather, for that matter.

The Airplane Factory has an alternative to yesterday’s battered trainers with the all-new Sling NGT (Next-Generation Trainer), a sporty, modern, FADEC-equipped, training aircraft. First; the Sling NGT looks like what a modern trainer should look like… with a big, high-visibility sliding bubble canopy, a modern Rotax engine, and a brand new G3X glass panel. The Twin Tigers Aerobatic Team is the 2019 recipient of the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship. One of the most prestigious awards in the airshow industry, the list of Barber honorees reads like an airshow hall of fame. Team owner Mark Sorenson took his first flying lesson at age 13 and soloed at age 16. He is a former U.S. Army AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter pilot who, at age 19, was one of the youngest combat-qualified Cobra pilots in Operation Desert Storm. Like Sorenson, Nowosielski learned to fly when he was still in high school, and he graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in 1999. It wasn’t long until he began his airline career, and he is now also a Boeing 737 pilot for Southwest, based in Orlando. It’s one of AirVenture’s best moments... really. Able Flight’s “Class of 2019” will be honored at a wings pinning ceremony on Tuesday, July 23rd at 10:00 AM at Theater In The Woods at EAA AirVenture. Seven scholarship recipients earned their pilot certificates in the program this year, and five will be on stage to receive their pilot wings. Special guests will include Aviation Hall of Fame inductee Patty Wagstaff. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
