Missile Launchers on Guard in DC

Most-Important Americans Get Best Defense

When President Bush delivered his State of the Union address last month, many Washingtonians were surprised to see a lot of military equipment on the streets, from HummVees (not their shiny Hummer cousins), to armor, to artillery.

When the speech was over, most of that equipment disappeared back to the military bases whence it came; but the recent "Orange Alert" status has brought it out again.

It's no longer unusual to see heavy equipment, even including such items of urban perimeter defense as the Avenger missile systems (shown), on the streets of the capital.

Not so long ago...

Just a few years ago, citizens were dismayed to see the 4-ton "flowerpots" on the streets and sidewalks, placed there to keep disgruntled American citizens from driving too close to a beseiged President; now, with the defense more-appropriately directed at "outside threats," we expect a greater presence of even heavier firepower, in the months to come.
