The U.S. Sport Aviation Expo 2014 featured many airplanes, and quite a few of these were either floatplanes or amphibians. ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, decided to stop by the Seaplane Pilot Association (SPA) display to get an update about the side of aviation that likes to get wet. SPA, by the way, is a member of the Airborne Partnership Initiative.
Jim talked with Steve McCaughey, the executive director of the Seaplane Pilots Association. In the video, McCaughey talks about the purpose and goals of the SPA. He explains that the SPA is an advocacy group, but they are also interested in promoting safety and good relations with others that use the same water facilities. They do their best to hold Fly-in’s that will interest a wide part of the community and invoke better relations with those who operate boats in the same areas as seaplanes.
McCaughey says there is a massive increase in the popularity of operating airplanes off water. He pointed out that many airplanes on display at the Expo that are equipped for land operation also have the capability to be mounted on floats.
As the conversation between Campbell and McCaughey continues, you’ll see great video of seaplanes of all kinds. If you have an interest in seaplane operation, the SPA is the place to go for information.
