Airborne 08.17.20: X-37B Wins Collier!, CAP Saves AGAIN, Masks For ALL?

Also: Crew-1 Launch Delay, Radiant LED Instruments, Van’s Updates IO-390 Usage, Ingenuity Mars-Copter

The X-37B spaceplane, a reusable, multi-purpose, system that operates without an onboard crew, won the prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy for advancing technology that pushes “the boundaries of flight and space exploration.”

In announcing the award, Jim Albaugh, chairman of The National Aeronautic Association which sponsors the competition, praised the X-37B, “As the world’s only autonomous, reusable spaceplane, it continues to contribute to our understanding of both space and air flight.” In all, the spaceplane has flown six missions since being launched for the first time on April 22, 2010. It is truly an extraordinary record of service... For the fourth consecutive fiscal year, the Civil Air Patrol has passed the century mark in lives saved, as credited by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. CAP, a USAF auxiliary, conducts approximately 90% of all search operations within the US as assigned by the AFRCC. The 100th and 101st save occurred Aug. 4, when CAP’s National Cell Phone Forensics Team provided the Wyoming Joint Operations Center with a high-priority area to focus search efforts for two lost hikers in Big Horn County. Masks everywhere? FlyersRights.org has formally submitted a rulemaking petition to the DoT to mandate mask wearing by all persons on planes and at airports. The DOT has just published the rulemaking petition. In late April, the CDC recommended the wearing of masks in public settings, especially when social distancing is hard to maintain. Air travel requires the close gathering of people from various parts of the country. DOT has acknowledged the need for mask wearing, among other safety precautions, in its joint guidance with DHS and HHS titled "Runway to Recovery." DOT published this guidance in early July, forcing airlines and airports to develop their own policies during the first few months of the coronavirus pandemic. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
