Bigelow Aerospace Idles Entire Workforce

COVID-19 Outbreak Only One Factor In The Move

Bigelow Aerospace has laid off its entire workforce, in part because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Space News reports that the company's remaining 68 employees were notified Monday that they had been idled. The company laid off 20 employees the previous week.

Among the factors contributing to the move was an order by Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak to close all "nonessential" businesses. Bigelow is headquartered in Las Vegas. The order threatens businesses with fines, penalties and the revocation of business licenses of companies that do not comply.

A company spokesperson told Space News that it intends to hire workers back once the emergency order has been lifted, but some analysts see the layoffs as being permanent.

Space companies in other states, such as California, have been able to remain open after being designated as essential industries by the federal government even after "stay at home" directives have been issued.
