Alberta Eliminates Fuel Tax On Certain Flights

WestJet Friday had something to say about the government of Alberta's decision to eliminate fuel taxes on international and trans-border flights departing from Alberta:

Thank you.

Clive Beddoe, WestJet's President, CEO and Executive Chairman, said, "At a time when the airline industry is under tremendous pressure as a result of mounting taxes and fees, we applaud Premiere Klein's initiative to eliminate the fuel taxes on international and trans-border flights from Alberta. We hope that the government will see its way to eliminate fuel taxes on domestic traffic and allow Albertans to travel more affordably to visit friends and family or to conduct business across the country."

WestJet operated international charter service on behalf of its partners from Alberta to destinations in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and the United States in 2003, paying the Alberta government approximately $70,000 in fuel taxes for the year. WestJet has recently announced plans to commence its own trans-border flights beginning in October 2004.
