Western Australia To Receive Trio Of AW139 Helicopters

Fleet Modernization and Rigorous Mission Favor Twin-Engine Bird

Leonardo S.p.A., the quasi-nationalized, Italian, multinational company specializing in aerospace, defense, and security has announced that three of its AW139 intermediate, twin-engine helicopters will enter Emergency Rescue Helicopter Service (ERHS), in Western Australia.

The aircraft, which will carry out search-and-rescue and inter-hospital patient transport missions, are part of the Australian state’s fleet modernization effort.

The AW139s will be delivered from Leonardo’s Vergiate final assembly facility in Italy in early 2023 and will enter service in Western Australia following dedicated mission customization. The new aircraft will feature a wide range of modern features, to include: 4-axis DAFCS (Digital Automatic Flight Control System), a hover-mode capable autopilot system, TCAS II, searchlight, camera, wire-cutter, and rescue hoist. The special ERHS interior and the advanced mission console will be installed in Australia. The helicopters will be supplied by CHC, a multinational, helicopter services company specializing in transportation to offshore oil and gas platforms; civilian search and rescue, and air medical evacuation services; and helicopter maintenance, repair, and overhaul.

Leonardo helicopters serve multiple agencies and purposes throughout Australia. To date, more than 130 civil, public-utility and military helicopters of various models have been sold down under, with over sixty, AW139s currently performing HEMS/SAR, law enforcement, offshore transport, and governmental missions.

To date, Leonardo has logged orders for over 1250 of its AW139 helicopters from more than 290 operators in over 80 countries. The AW139’s popularity derives of a favorable confluence of sophistication, durability, and overall performance. Among the machine’s most impressive features is a unique 60+ minute, run-dry capable, main gear-box which enhances both reliability and safety.
