Airlines Report Record Pilot Hiring

Troubles Abound, But Hiring Continues

Air Inc. has just released its May Hiring Summary, showing the largest pilot-hiring month since September 11th of 2001. Despite the industry challenges, the airlines still need to feed pilots into their system.

National Airlines hired 427 pilots, leading the way. Non-jet operators added 339 new pilots, up 169 percent from April's total of 126. Even nine major airlines are actively recruiting and seven of those actually added pilots last month, hiring 181. Jet operators hired 151 pilots in May.

Kit Darby, President of Air Inc., noted that if the merger of US Airways and America West is approved, the new carrier will be the seventh largest carrier in the US, bumping Southwest to Eighth place.

Air Inc. estimates hiring for the major airlines to be 2,500 this year. Several of the major carriers, (American, ATA, Delta, Northwest, United, US Air) have pilots on furlough, currently 8,175 pilots. A total of 9,168 pilots are furloughed throughout the industry.
