LAPD Receives Early Funding To Upgrade Helo Fleet's Avionics

Sagem To Provide Integrated Cockpits For AS350s

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Air Support Division (ASD) announced recently preliminary funding has been submitted to upgrade its entire fleet of 14 AS350 B2 helicopters with Sagem Integrated Cockpit Display Systems (ICDS).

The LAPD is the largest airborne municipal law enforcement agency in the world, and made the decision last year to outfit several of their B2’s with the Sagem ICDS on a trial basis. Grant funding was later sought to upgrade and standardize the entire fleet of A-Stars.

LAPD sought to upgrade their aircraft presently equipped with an Electronic Heading Situation Indicator (EHSI) system only, and standardize the fleet as much as possible. The Sagem ICDS are able to provide Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Multi-Function Display (MFD) with Engine Monitoring System (EMS) capabilities for their AS350 B2s without the Thales Vehicle Engine Monitoring Device (VEMD).

LAPD aircraft without VEMD will be equipped with two displays consisting of one PFD and one MFD with EMS. LAPD aircraft with VEMD will be equipped with a PFD only.

Sagem tells ANN the LAPD flies 18,000 hours and responds to 38,000 calls for service each year.
